Emigration from
one country to another creates situations which also often
affect the position of emigrants, their families and their
descendants in terms of nationality and which often lead to
problems, above all in the event of return to the country of
origin.
For Trentino
people and their descendants (but also for the descendants of
emigrants from other areas which are currently part of the
Italian State and which in the past belonged to the
Austro-Hungarian Empire: the provinces of Bolzano, Gorizia and
Trieste, part of the province of Udine and some communes in the
provinces of Belluno and Vicenza) the situation is even more
complicated, because it is necessary to distinguish between
those who emigrated before 16 July 1920 and those who emigrated
after this date, which marked the coming into effect of the
peace treaty signed after the First World War by Italy and
Austria in Saint Germain (France).
Here we give some
information of a general nature, which we consider to be of most
direct interest to Italians abroad, in particular as regards
those from Trentino.
This information
in no way attempts to cover all possible cases which may arise
within such a complex issue as nationality. Only the competent
Italian Consulate or the Commune of residence in Italy can
supply precise information on specific cases.
This information
sheet on citizenship supplements and substitutes the note
published, in Italian alone, in issue no. 24 of the magazine TRENTINO
EMIGRAZIONE in June 2002.
It may be used
freely by all, also in other publications providing information.
In this case it is requested that the source be cited. |
